![]() Since the 1st January 1999, the official co-ordinate system for South Africa is based on the World Geodetic System 1984 ellipsoid, commonly known as WGS84, with the International Terrestrial Reference Frame 1991 (ITRF91 (epoch 1994.0))coordinates of the Hartebeesthoek Radio Astronomy Observatory Telescope used as the origin of this system. The upgrading, recomputation and repositioning of the South African coordinate system was driven by the advancement of modern positioning technologies and the globalization of these techniques for navigation and surveying. In addition to these flaws and distortions, most national geodetic networks do not have the centre of their reference ellipsoids co-incident with the centre of the Earth, thus making them useful only to their area of application. The Cape Datum was based on the work of HM Astronomers: Sir Thomas Maclear, between 18, and Sir David Gill, between 18, whose initial geodetic objectives were to verify the size and shape of the Earth in the Southern Hemisphere and later to provide geodetic control for topographic maps and navigation charts.įrom these beginnings, the network was extended to eventually cover the entire country and now comprises approximately 29 000 highly visible trigonometrical beacons on mountains, high buildings and water towers, as well as approximately 20 000 easily accessible town survey marks.Īs with other national control survey networks throughout the world, which were established using traditional surveying techniques, flaws and distortions in these networks have become easily detectable using modern positioning techniques such as the Global Positioning System (GPS). This Datum was referenced to the Modified Clarke 1880 ellipsoid and had its origin point at Buffelsfontein, near Port Elizabeth. Prior to 1st January 1999, the co-ordinate reference system, used in South Africa as the foundation for all surveying, engineering and georeferenced projects and programmes, was the Cape Datum. The datum was implemented in 1999 when it replaced the Cape Datum. ![]() The Hartebeesthoek94 Datum is the official geodetic datum for South Africa. It always comes down to the same thing: substitute a single glyph or a sequence of glyphs by another glyph.Īssuming you have your glyphs in question already drawn ( f, i and the ligature glyphs called f_i and f_f_i), all you need to do is add some code to control the substitution, like this:įeature followed by liga, and repeated in the last line is the predefined name of the feature, the identifier that a program like QuarkXPress or InDesign needs in order to know which feature to look at when you choose «Ligatures», (see below for a comprehensive list of feature names and the features they trigger.) The sub statements - you can also write substitute - within the curly brackets tell the program that if the sequence of glyphs named f| f| i or f| i is found (in the feature statement the glyphs of a sequences are separated by a space), replace it by the glyphs named f_f_i resp. Let’s take a look at a simple example that, like all OpenType features we’re talking about here, deals with the replacement of glyphs, called glyph substitution (short GSUB). ![]() Read on and find out that it’s really not difficult! All examples that we will discuss should be considered starting points, just to pique your interest. We’ll start casually and work our way to more complex features and ideas. In this article we’ll give you a look behind the scenes of OpenType substitution features - a general rather than comprehensive overview as the subject is simply too vast. Whether you want your typeface to change the sequence of f|f|i into the appropriate ligature or want to use old-style figures instead of tabular, you’ll need to add features to your font - glyph substitution definitions - to make it happen. Simply adding a glyph with a ligature to your font doesn’t mean the program you’re using knows when or how to apply it. ![]() With these many sets of glyphs integrated in a single font, we are faced with the challenge of including definitions instructing the applications we're using when to show which glyph. ![]() We now design and produce OpenType fonts which can consist of thousands of characters - additional ligatures, various figure sets, small caps, stylistic alternates, … - referred to as glyphs. The Type1 format where 256 characters are assigned to keys on our keyboard, is becoming a thing of the past. ![]() This powerful connection creates a high energy channel through which one can combine will with emotions – opening the door to joy, happiness and emotional stability. Other prefixes, such as "kibi" and "gibi", correctly denote multiples of 1,024. This is why a 250GB hard drive displays only about 232GB available.īecause the correct definition of prefixes like "giga" is an even multiple of 1,000, for simplicity we've used powers of 1,000 instead of 1,024 here. That variation grows as you move up the size ladder, which is much more noticeable at higher storage amounts. Because of how the binary system works, one kilobyte actually equals 1,024 bytes, not an even 1,000. Tiger has (or can have) a memory of your actions in the Recent Items menu. ![]() Keep in mind that a megabyte is different than a megabit, however.īefore we move on, we should mention the difference between how computers and humans measure storage. Figure 25-4: The first two steps in using LaunchBar bring the required. Having Integrated GPU- If you have an integrated GPU, you cannot use the full memory until you upgrade to the dedicated graphics card, as an integrated GPU uses the memory from your ram, which is why you are not allowed to use full of your Ram. ![]() As another bit of perspective, a standard CD holds about 700MB. One megabyte holds roughly one minute of music in MP3 format. The last size before we get to larger denominations is a megabyte (MB), which is 1,000 kilobytes (or one million bytes). I have also noticed when you close the launcher and your downloading something it does not resume it will re download everything again.maybe there is no support for this. To get an idea, a text file containing about 1,000 characters equals roughly one kilobyte. Launch Quicksilver and type 8 - Option - S to get to the Shelf, a pasteboard of sorts. You'll recognize the "kilo" prefix, since it's used in other measurements of a thousand, like "kilometer" (1,000 meters). Like most measurements, as you increase in size, prefixes are used to denote larger amounts of data.Ī kilobyte (KB), the first major grouping, equals 1,000 bytes. This, for example, stores one character in the ASCII encoding standard. For example, in a video game, a single bit could be 1 if the player had obtained a certain upgrade and 0 if they didn't have it yet.Įight bits together are called a byte, which is the building block of storage amounts. A byte can contain 256 possible values. To put this in perspective, one bit is enough to store whether a value is true or false. Raw facts that have been collected but not organized are known as. Since computers use the binary numbering system, each bit can be either a 0 or a 1. ( "Don't run out of RAM" and "Buy more RAM" are no use - the former I have no control over, and the latter I've already done.In case you're not familiar, let's first review the fundamentals of computer storage.Ī bit is the smallest amount of data a computer can store. Near the bottom of the General tab, click Disk Cleanup to remove temporary files. Right-click and choose Properties to open another window with even more information. Then, select any of them to see both taken and available space. I usually have to reset my machine, causing data loss from time to time and generally a lot of inconvenience.ĭo you have any practical advice on making the consequences of such a mistake less dire? Perhaps some registry tweak to limit the max amount of virtual memory an app is allowed to allocate? Or some CLR flag that will limit this only for the current application? (It's usually in. First, open the File Explorer and click Computer to see all of your available drives. This doesn't happen too often, but when it does it's disastrous. Note that not all Chrome apps run in the background. Toggle off 'Continue running background apps when Google Chrome is closed.' This will ensure Chrome isn't using any memory when you have all Chrome browser windows closed. Not literally of course, but it will starve itself of usable physical RAM so badly that even running the task manager will require half an hour of swapping (after all the runaway application is still allocating more and more memory all the time). To do that, open the Chrome Settings and go to Advanced > System. This kind of thing used to cause the program to die fairly quickly with an "out of memory" error, but these days Windows will go out of its way to give this non-existent memory to the application, and in fact is apparently prepared to commit suicide doing so. Every now and again I find myself doing something moderately dumb that results in my program allocating all the memory it can get and then some.
